In this 24 Hours to Hell and Back episode, Gordon Ramsay visits Patrick Molloy's in Hermosa Beach, California.
Patrick Molloy's had three owners - Alice, her current husband Fred and her ex-husband.
Her ex husband sadly passed away and it passed to their son Patrick Molloy Bastian.
The unconventional partnership and tension in the restaurant has continued between Fred and Patrick, frequently putting Alice in the middle.
The staff play off the tension and aren't sure who to follow, so misbehave often.
Fred believes Patrick is lazy at work while Patrick says Fred doesn’t respect him as an owner.
They lost $135,000 in the last year and can only stay open for a few more months.
Gordon arrives in disguise with some local surfers who have already ordered from the menu.
They have ordered chicken wings, tacos, shepherd’s pie and a pizza.
The chicken wings are dry, the taco is a mess with frozen fish, the shepherd's pie is bland, the gravy is gross, and the pizza is soggy.
Gordon removes his disguise and meets with the owners and Head Chef.
He makes them see people show up at their restaurant because everywhere else is full.
They believe their food is good, but he closes the restaurant and they go outside to the Hell on Wheels truck.
He shows them hidden footage from the restaurant which shows inappropriate behaviour, arguments, a filthy, mouldy kitchen, cross contamination and improperly stored produce.
The restaurant is closed for 24 hours to fix the problems.
The staff meet with Gordon and they complain about restaurant leadership and complacency.
They see more of Fred than Patrick and he admits that he has given up.
Gaby the Head Chef admits the chicken wings are 5 days old and have been reheated.
Gordon reads the customer reviews and they are brutal about bad food, drinks and service.
The renovation starts with designers in the main restaurant while Gordon takes kitchen staff for an inspection.
Gaby reveals they don’t do any deep cleaning of the kitchen.
Gordon finds excess cooked food in the walk-in, powder gravy sauce and spoilt vegetables in the fridge.
The kitchen staff is tasked with cleaning out the kitchen whilst Gordon meets with Gaby.
Fred is in complete control of the kitchen and dictates what Gaby does with the food and how much food he makes.
Gordon believes Gaby has given up but he insists he loves the kitchen.
Gordon sits with the owners. Patrick says he and Fred don’t see eye to eye.
Gordon sees how the feuding is affecting Alice and she is asked to go home and rest.
Gordon shows them footage about their altercation.
He tackles Patrick on running away from his problem with Fred rather than confront it.
He tells them they need to get on the same page and make it work while Alice is still alive.
Gordon meets the kitchen staff and shows the simple delicious dishes they are going to master.
Fresh Caesar Salad, Steak Frites, Corned Beef Reuben Salad, Shephard’s Pie, Fish Tacos and Spicy chicken Wings will be added to the menu.
Gordon’s team take the staff through the recipes and they practice them for the next 6 hours.
Gordon has a one-on-one with Patrick; he tells him it is obvious that Fred wants to leave and have Patrick take over.
But Patrick doesn’t see it as it has been over 10 years of tension between them.
By midnight, the kitchen staff are making progress in training and the renovations are ongoing with some staff sneaking naps.
Gordon finds some time to talk with Fred, he can’t admit he trusts Patrick and doesn’t see himself as his father figure.
Gordon tells him to meet Patrick in the middle.
In the morning, with 9 hours to go, he calls the staff to sample the new food they will be serving. They are all impressed with it all.
Gaby is shown the kitchen and he is proud and ready to take the lead.
He says as much to Fred and Patrick and they agree to back his decisions in the kitchen.
Gordon asks all the team to leave the dining area and the clocks are stopped so Gordon can talk to Fred and Patrick.
Fred says he is going to change but neither Patrick nor Gordon believe him. Alice comes in and Gordon leaves them to talk.
Patrick and Fred apologise to Alice about putting her in the middle and moving forward they will try their best to make it work.
The clocks are restarted and finishing touches are put on the restaurant.
Gordon gifts the owners a picture of all three of them embracing and they put it up on the restaurant wall.
Patrick is announced as the manager for the night.
By 4.30pm the clock reaches its final countdown and customers are let in.
They are happy with the light and vibrancy, the walls have been broken down, the lights modernised and the drab decor has been replaced.
Patrick tells Fred and Alice to sit down and enjoy the service.
During the service there is a backlog of meals and Gordon goes in to the kitchen and sees Gaby isn't taking control as he should.
Patrick is made to talk to him to calm down and make him feel less flustered.
The talking works and he is more vocal giving orders in the kitchen.
The customers have nothing but good things to say about the food and the relaunch is a success.
