Kalaveraz Cantina / Sierra Madre Cantina - Bar Rescue Update - Open or Closed?

Kalaveraz Cocina-Cantina Bar Rescue

In this Bar Rescue episode, Jon Taffer visits Kalaveraz Cocina and Cantina in Escondido, California.

Kalaveraz is owned by Juan Magana, who bought it when it was called Anejo’s Bar and Grill in 2018.

Juan has got years of experience in food retail.

He watched his parents run a restaurant and was confident in his ability to run one.

Anejo’s was a popular, busy, local restaurant so it looked like he was buying a ready made success.

But it was shut down the day Juan signed the papers due to health violations from vermin infestations.

The closure of the bar made the local news and led to a bad reputation of the bar.

Juan has spent about $250,000 on the bar, $70,000 of which is from his parents, to rebrand and reopen.

His lack of experience and poor management has contributed to the poor performance of the restaurant.

The restaurant is losing $10,000 a month, Juan is $250,000 in debt and has cashed in his 401k.

The staff believe that he is a bad manager and they have not received paychecks in a while.

Jon recons the bar with bar expert Tommy and chef Anthony.

They don’t understand the meaning of the name and the writing on the sign is illegible from where they are parked.

He gives them the lowdown on Juan, his finances and his run of bad luck.

In the footage, Juan is shown to be rude and nasty to staff as well as making them work for no pay.

They see the interior of the restaurant is huge but it lacks the intimacy that helps establishments succeed.

There are almost 50 customers in the Cantina and just one cook, Jose, who cooks the food to order quickly.

They see dedication when Carlos the manager comes in to support them in the kitchen.

They see good sanitary practices as the kitchen and front area are clean.

He can’t figure out what's wrong with the bar at all.

Jon sends in his companions on the recon to try out their service.

They sit at a table and order a Cadillac Margarita and a Tamarindo.

Jon sneaks in with a hat and chats up a customer at the bar.

He says the food can be better and Jon would be waiting a while before he gets served.

JR serves Tommy and Anthony their drinks and the Cadillac is strong and doesn't look like it’s supposed to.

At the bar Jon waits for almost 15 mins before Jessica, the bartender, gets to him and he orders a Cadillac Strawberry.

They are out of Tequila, so she uses anything she has in stock to make the drink.

It is not served in a Margarita glass and is too sweet and Jon notices the bar and tables are not being cleared of old drinks.

Jon finally meets Juan and points out the mess around the bar to him including a wad of cash still sitting on the bar unattended.

He has Juan taste his drink, which he admits is awful and he says he has no busboys so servers should be cleaning up.

Jon asks him why the bar is failing and he blames his staff calling them ‘turkeys’.

Jon repeats this loudly this for the bar to hear and the staff, including Jessica get upset and angry.

Jessica informs the bar they have not been paid for a month and Juan claims it is only a week.

Jon tells him to pay his staff or he is not coming in to help, to the applause of the whole bar.

After Jon leaves Juan makes an announcement showing the bar his staffs’ checks.

Jessica challenges him to read out the dates but he doesn't and claims her check is at his home.

In private Juan says he is a bit late on payroll but he had the checks ready and he was planning on paying them that day anyway.

Jon meets staff the next day and tells them all that he noticed that is wrong with the bar.

He has noticed Juan’s rudeness to staff, bad food, slow clearing of used plates and glasses, bad drinks and staff to owner tension.

The staff says that Juan has gotten nastier with the stress.

Jon reveals that he had Partender analyse their drinks and they lost $4890 in three days.

Juan says he has too much on his plate and he steps in for staff including cooks as he doesn’t have the staff.

Alyson speaks up and says Juan fired the old cooks because he refused to pay them to keep costs down.

Jon tells Juan he needs to treat his staff better so they can be committed to the success of the bar and help pull him out of the hole he is in.

Juan apologies to the staff for his behaviour.

Tommy Palmer, a bar expert, comes in to train them on a Cadillac Margarita giving Jessica one on one attention.

Anthony trains Jose and Juan in the kitchen on cooking and serving a pork dish.

They have a goal of no more than 2 mins wait time for a drink and 10 mins for food.

Jon has arranged a Stress Test to test their serve times but it doesn't start well.

They are soon overwhelmed with food and drink orders.

Many drinks are dumped for bad mixing and the bartenders are slow, especially Jessica.

In the kitchen, they have 20 orders, but the food isn't going out fast enough with a 24-minute wait time.

Juan is sent to the kitchen to help but when customers are served food it is served without cutlery.

After 30 mins it is obvious they can’t meet up with the orders and the bar is shut down, with the test declared a major failure.

It is clear from the failure of the stress test that more training is needed.

Juan defends his staff for the first time.

He speaks to them honestly about his financial situation and how much he has on the line.

The next day they begin training again with Anthony and Tommy.

New classic meals and drinks are added to the menu that are quick and easy to make.

They decide to keep the Mexican theme of the restaurant but made it more intimate.

The night of the reveal Jon explains that the previous sign and brand was confusing.

The name has been changed to Sierra Madre Cantina, inspired by the Sierra Madre mountains that connect the US and Mexico.

Inside, the bar has been made more intimate with layered decor bringing in vibrant colours, patterns and nature into the space.

There's a pyramid behind the bar and Juan loves it.

There are new POS systems from Harbour touch, Sky Tabs for payments, One Stone for PR they can regulate from their phones.

They have new trees and vegetation from International Treescapes and stonework from Replications Unlimited.

Left Coast Refrigeration fixed their walk-in and they got a new ice box and Alter Design company did the vinyl mural.

They have also have been supplied with subscriptions to Partender and TVT.

Juan introduces his mother and father to Jon.

On relaunch night, there is a queue of eager customers. They are let in and the launch is underway.

The orders come in and they are able to serve customers on time with Juan making drinks confidently.

Customers love the food and drinks; staff are supporting each other and customers are enjoying their time in the bar.

It is hard to find customers without drinks and all the customers are happy.

What Happened Next at Kalaveraz Cocina-Cantina?

Six weeks later business was increasing, Juan respects his staff and is working on new promotions to being in new customers.

They have kept the name Sierra Madre Cantina.

Sierra Madre Cantina is open.

Reviews are mostly popular after the episode with the food, drinks and service being praised by customers.

Yelp Reviews are also very positive with a few minor complaints on service.

Rob Ben's - Bar Rescue Update - Open or Closed?

Rob Ben's Bar Rescue

In this Bar Rescue episode, Jon Taffer visits Rob Ben’s in Oakland, California.

Rob Ben’s is a popular community bar and restaurant owned by football legend Marshawn Lynch.

The bar was opened in 2018 and named in tribute to Marshawn’s late childhood friend, Rob Benjamin.

Robert Benjamin was shot and killed in a violent altercation in Oakland in 2007.

Marshawn gave his aunties Kecia and Shawny, a chance to run the restaurant side of the business.

In his bid to give Rob Ben’s a family-like feel, he also hired his cousin Donte and brother Dave as bartenders.

He also hired Ralph, Rob Benjamin’s brother as a cook in the kitchen.

Marshawn had other businesses and charities that needed his attention so he let Kecia take over running the place.

She doesn’t delegate and tries to do everything herself.

As a result of this she is overworked and has started getting stress-related illnesses.

With her absence due to her illness, other family have refused to step up to lead the bar.

With no leadership the bar is quickly declining.

Marshawn meets with Jon in his car outside Rob Ben’s and tells him about his love for his community about the bar.

Jon notes the colours in the bar are red and black.

Marshawn says the colour scheme is based on the colours the Saints football team.

These were the colours of his former team when Rob came to watch him play and it is a treasured memory of him.

Marshawn tells Jon how much of an influence Rob was on his life.

He introduces the staff shown on the footage to Jon including his aunty Shawny.

She had worked at the bar under the previous owners and his uncle Cullen, who helps in the kitchen.

Donte is shown on the footage drinking behind the bar.

He is too busy drinking and ignoring the customers trying to get his attention to order their drinks.

One customer asks to order a chicken salad.

They take the order even though it isn’t on the menu and they don’t have the ingredients to make it.

Ten minutes later, they return to the customer and tell them that they are unable to do the order.

Marshawn doesn’t know his sales figures and is unsure how much liquor is sold in his bar.

Jon shows Marshawn a Partender report for the previous weekend.

They lost $3726 in two days, leading to a projected loss of $16,000 a month and $193,000 a year.

As Donte continues to drink, he begins rapping and using swear words in front of customers including a mother and daughter, who are sat at the bar.

He climbs on the bar to sit on it and is rude to staff and customers.

Marshawn is upset by what he is seeing in the bar and Jon says it is time to go in.

They both enter the bar and Jon heads straight for Donte to point out the uncleared glasses and plates.

Donte gets defensive and Marshawn explains that he is the one paying the bills so things need to be in order.

They confront Donte on his language and how it was offensive and it is bad for their business.

They also talk to Shawny about how she could allow the behaviour of Donte to happen and doing nothing to try and stop it.

The next day, Kecia comes in to work on payroll when she should be on bedrest.

Jon calls the staff together for a staff meeting.

Kecia says she was disappointed with what she heard had happened on the previous night.

Jon shows them reports that shows that their food costs are too high and they are losing money with their food sales.

Jon reveals the results of the Partender report and they are astounded to hear about the losses they are making via drinks.

Donte claims he paid for the beer he had drunk the night before but his aunties don’t believe him.

All the staff say they are onboard with making changes in order to save the bar.

Jon brings in Mixologist Alex Goode and Chef Jason Santos to train the staff behind the bar and in the kitchen.

Jon tells them that he is taking down the awning to make the sign more prominent.

Alex trains the bartenders on new cocktails and notes they show promise, while Jason focused on food presentation in the kitchen.

Jon wants to perform a stress test to see how the staff cope after their training.

Orders start coming in but customers need replacement drinks because the ones they were served are poor.

Jason notices that there is no process for food delivery from the kitchen with no table numbers or order tickets.

Jason shows the kitchen staff how to plate multiple plates of food rather than one at a time.

The stress test isn’t too bad and Jon commends the staff for their efforts.

The Stress Test is ended so Jon’s team can start remodeling the bar.

Jon meets with Jason and Alex to figure out signature drinks and food that can help the restaurant.

Jon also sat down with Kecia and Marshawn and told them they need to communicate better with the staff.

They need to praise them when the do good and they need to punish them when they do bad.

It is obvious that the staff care for the success of the business.

The staff changed in attitude and effort as soon as they were made aware that they were losing the bar money.

After the renovations, staff are brought in and see the new awning with the bar being slightly renamed to Rob Ben’s Neighbourhood Soul.

The inside of the bar has been modernised, with a football mural of Marshawn from his high school days to his NFL career.

Marshawn and all the staff are happy with the changes that Jon has made to the bar.

There are two Harbour Touch POS systems, SkyTabs and OneStone for video graphics.

There is a new ice machine from Manitowac Ice, a lifetime access to TVT and a subscription to Partender.

They surprise Jon by giving him a staff uniform for the bar as he is now part of the team.

On relaunch night, the staff are working hard and they are doing well.

The kitchen is doing well with them taking 7 to 8 minutes on food orders.

The patrons are loving the new food and are happy.

Jon and Donte swap a jacket and shirt to the sound of cheers from the bar.

Jon reflects at the end of the episode that it has been one of his favourite Bar Rescues.

What Happened Next at Rob Ben's?

Six weeks later, their costs have reduced and sales have increased.

The menu changes has been well received with customers, with repeat business and customer favourites.

Rob Ben's is open.

Reviews after the episode appear to suggest the bar is focussing more on food sales.

Also leaning more towards being a restaurant with a bar, rather than a bar with a restaurant.

Reviews are mostly positive on the food but there are negative complaints on customer service and rude staff.

Marshawn came out of retirement and started playing for the Seahawks in December 2019.

The Broadway Club / The Roost Bar - Bar Rescue Update - Open or Closed?

The Broadway Club / The Roost Bar Bar Rescue

In this Bar Rescue episode, Jon Taffer visits The Broadway Club in Tooele, Utah.

The Broadway Club is a dive bar owned by real estate agent Randy Hunt.

He wanted to be a silent owner so he offered Patty Bullock a part of the business to run the bar on a day to day basis.

Patty likes to come to the bar but is more interested in partying at the bar rather than running it.

Bartenders Sarah and Bobbie complain that Patty doesn't know how to run a bar.

Mike the security guard says she is constantly drinking at the bar.

Alos that all the staff have lost respect for her authority at the bar.

Randy is now in $200,000 of debt and he has a strained relationship with Patty as the bar continues to decline.

Jon meets with Sarah outside the bar.

She tells him that she is the longest serving member of staff and has been there for six years.

They see that the street is completely deserted with other surrounding buildings boarded up and abandoned.

They spy on the bar via the cameras and she tells him that Patty has no idea how to run the bar and drinks a lot on shift.

Adam, Patty’s husband comes in and helps serve food from the kitchen from time to time.

Randy is at the bar for the service and he also helps expedite food when he is in.

Sarah says he is involved at the bar at times and helps when Patty asks him to come in.

She also introduces Mike and Bobbie from the footage on screen.

She explains that there hasn’t been food served at the bar for the past 2 months.

Brandon was hired recently as a cook to boost sales.

They see Patty trying food service and is confused as to what to do with the food.

Sarah tells him about the friction between the owners.

The staff stay out of it to avoid getting dragged into the conflict.

Jon has some local radio stars do the recon of the bar.

Sarah tells him they card everyone they serve, regardless of age.

They order a cocktail called liquid marijuana and a margarita.

The cocktail is too sweet and the margarita is served with a tired lime and in a pint glass.

The radio stars then order some nachos, chicken chip, fries and a burger.

On the camera Jon and Sarah see the food being prepared without gloves, them serving burnt cheese and general untidiness in the kitchen.

The recon team wait for up to 30 mins for their food and when they taste it they hate the food and think the taste is poor.

During all this going Patty is drinking and not helping clean up.

Jon and Sarah enter the bar and Jon is carded.

Patty immediately bursts into tears but Jon lays into her about how she has clearly dropped the ball.

She stages houses for showings for her day job but allows the bar get into a terrible state.

He questions Randy for his decision to partner with someone with no experience.

Especially with not having any experience of running a bar himself.

Patty is supposed to run the day-to-day business of the bar but is not involved during their busiest hours or with the kitchen.

Patty said it wasn’t her intent and Jon threatens to walk out if she takes another drink in the bar.

They are all made to clean the bar that night so that Jon can get to work the next day.

Patty is frustrated and decides to take it out on Sarah and they have an argument.

The next day, Jon has a staff meeting and gets to know the different members of staff.

Adam is not on the payroll or officially a member of staff but he comes in and helps out when Patty asks him.

Randy says he has only received 2 rent checks in 7 months so he is owed by the business.

Patty believes she’s a customer of the bar when she drinks.

Jon lets her know other customers see her as an owner, a drunk owner.

Staff say that customers leave because of her attitude at the bar.

Randy says he doesn’t want to work with Patty anymore.

They agree that she should be given 60 days to turn things around or she hands over the business amicably.

Sarah says she is not free to manage the bar and the staff with Patty in charge.

They call a truce and she will be given more freedom to manage the staff.

Jon introduces Amy Koffsky, an expert bartender and Vic Vegas, an expert Chef to train the staff.

Amy teaches them some balanced drinks that are not too sweet.

The kitchen is trained on their most popular meals of quesadillas, burgers and fried chicken.

It is the night of stress test and they struggle with pour consistency and speed of fulfilling the drink orders.

The burgers and quesadillas are taking some time to cook and the bestselling order is the fried chicken.

Soon the food orders start piling up and the kitchen staff are overwhelmed.

Patty is supposed to be taking food orders but at first no one can find her for some time.

She steps up and does what she can but they are unable to recover the service.

The kitchen just can’t keep up and the stress test is shutdown with customers sent home.

Jon is impressed with Patty stepping up and they all worked together well.

Jon says they need a redesign and much more training to get better.

Jon meets with Amy and Vic and they devise a plan to bring customers from downtown to the bar.

Vic trains the kitchen staff on two new fried chicken dishes that are designed to make customers order more drinks.

Amy trains them on classic simple drinks inspired by party drinks from the nineties.

Jon meets with the Mayor Debbie Winn to redesign the downtown area to brighten up the buildings around the bar.

On relaunch night Jon reveals that the city has plans to revive the area and the bar is the first.

The bar is renamed The Roost Bar and its unique selling point is that they will be serving all you can eat fried chicken all day.

There is a new sign outside the bar, promoting the new name and direction of the bar.

The inside the bar has been modernised with wood decor and detailing.

There are new matching chairs and barstools, a new Berg system, two Harbour Touch POS systems and SkyTabs.

Rockless Table provided the table bases and there are Orange Door Entertainment Systems.

There are also new uniforms with the words ‘Stay Cocky’ on them.

Goldmine Bar Doors put in the new doors in the bar and the brick sign on the wall used bricks sourced from a local mine.

It’s time for the relaunch and customers are let in. They are impressed with the new decor and direction of the bar.

The staff are keeping up with both the drink and food orders.

The customers love the signature cocktails and the chicken.

What Happened Next at The Broadway Club / The Roost Bar?

Sixty days later, new business and new customers are coming into the bar and sales are up.

Patty stopped drinking at the bar whilst working and she started paying Randy back.

Sarah is now a manager and earns twice as much as she used to.

They no longer serve unlimited fried chicken.

They made claims about the show on social media that the show was trying to pressure the staff to drink on the job.

They kept the new name and state restrictions caused them to temporarily close shortly after Jon visited.

The reviews before this are mostly positive with the new food being a big hit.

The bar was later renamed to Pit Stop Bar and Grill.

The Grant Bar and Lounge / Leia's - Bar Rescue Update - Open or Closed?

The Grant Bar Bar Rescue

In this Bar Rescue episode, Jon Taffer visits the Grant Bar and Lounge in Tracy, California.

The Grant is owned by former construction manager DJ Miller, who bought the bar in 2014.

He thought it would be easy and the bar did well for the first 2 years then things started falling apart.

The staff tried to help and suggest ways of improving but DJ is not willing to listen.

His ex-wife and silent business partner Tammy has also tried to talk to him but has got nowhere.

They are losing $5000 a month and are $190,000 in debt.

Jon recons the bar with Chef Jason Santos and mixologist Amy Koffsky.

They notice the bar is in a good location with high traffic.

However, there is nothing about the bar that stands out to attract customers inside.

They see the bar has multiple competing concepts and they need to unify.

They see DJ on the cameras and Jon gives his companions the lowdown.

DJ only has about 6 more months of money left to invest in saving the bar, after which he would be forced to shut down.

He wants to hand the business down to his 10-year-old daughter when the time comes.

DJ also discourages his business partner and ex-wife from any input in the bar.

Tommy is the bar manager, Trina and Victoria are bartenders, Roxy and Heather are waitresses and James is the cook.

They see over pouring at the bar and wonder where DJ is and instead of overseeing the bar he is in the kitchen.

They also notice there are few female patrons in the bar.

Amy is sent in alone to test their service and to find out why women don’t visit the bar.

Amy asks for basic cocktails geared towards women and they say they don't have the ingredients to be able to prepare them.

Amy settles on a simple two-recipe drink, a gimlet.

The bartender asks the manager and then the owner how the drink is made but neither know so they google it.

Amy gets her drink, tastes it but it's too strong to drink. Amy also orders some food.

In the kitchen there is no proper cooking equipment, just a small deep fryer they use to cook everything.

They make some chicken wings carelessly and a wing falls on the floor.

The cook is preparing food with no gloves and is not washing his hands before touching kitchen tools and other food.

This happens in front of DJ and he doesn't say anything about the breach of food safety rules.

The chicken and nachos are about to be served.

Jon and Jason decide to enter and stop the service before potentially harmful food is served.

Jon tells the customers not to touch the food and that it might be contaminated, including glasses from the bar.

Jon then angrily confronts DJ in the kitchen.

He demands the kitchen is cleaned and they will commence the transformation of the bar the next day.

Tommy and some staff are happy DJ was called out on the problems at the bar.

DJ calls a staff meeting and shifts blame the staff, saying they have messed up and James let them down with his practices.

He then asks them to clean up the bar.

The next day Jon speaks with DJ to find out his motivations in owning the bar.

DJ says the issues with the bar is consistency in the bar service.

He has a high turnover of staff and they don’t care about the bar.

The staff say his blaming them is unfair.

Tommy reveals he doesn’t train staff and he has only been there for 3-4months, compared to a bartender who has been there for about a year.

Jon notes that consistency has never been a priority since no one had even talked about trainings.

DJ starts to cry and Tommy tries to console him but Jon is having none of it.

Jon invites Tammy in to help deliver the numbers.

The Partender report for 3-4 days shows that they lost $7600 in three days through overpouring.

This totals up to $33,000 a month and $395,000 a year.

DJ isn't managing the employees or the bars costs.

Tammy says he is a good father but the problems she has with him are bar related and aren’t personal.

For the stress test Tammy is put in charge of the kitchen and DJ is in charge of the front of the house.

Amy and Jason are brought in to train the staff.

Amy gives the staff constructive criticism to show DJ how to encourage his staff to do better.

Jason comes in to get DJ into the kitchen.

There they unveil a gift from Jon, he has bought them a top of the line steam table.

Jason takes DJ, Tammy and the cook through making a mini meatball pizza that they can add to the menu.

The stress test starts and the cocktails aren't being made properly and have to be thrown out.

One of the waitresses is slow on taking orders and drinks are slow to come out.

DJ is brought in to make drinks and have someone else watch the tables.

In the kitchen they are slow to get food out too, with tickets coming in fast.

The bar soon starts chanting they want drinks and the staff are overwhelmed.

Trina bursts into tears and locks herself in the bathroom.

Tammy is called out to witness the state of the bar and how poorly it is functioning.

The stress test is a disaster and they shut the bar down.

DJ calls a staff meeting and consoles the staff saying they will do better next time.

Jon and the experts meet and they note the area is harsher than they thought.

They feel that they need to upgrade the bar to meet the local tastes.

Kim says they need some fun, feminine cocktails to attract female patrons and trains them on a new pouch cocktail.

Jason says they need simple, non-messy nightclub food and trains them on making small portions of ribs.

Jon speaks with DJ and Tammy on their relationship and how it is important to be on better terms for the sake of their daughter.

The success of the bar is also integral to the state of their relationship.

Jon’s team works all night and they unveil a new name Leia’s.

The bar will be named after the owners’ daughter, to remind them who they are making the business a success for.

The interior has been made more intimate and there’s blue light everywhere.

There is a dancefloor with drink rails round it so it can be converted to a sitting area for overflow dining, where needed.

Harbour Touch provided four POS systems and Turbo Chef provided equipment in the kitche.

One Stone Hub provided digital table tents for PR and East Coast Chair and Barstool provided the chairs and barstools.

Point of View Graphics provided the wall graphics and Rockless Tables provided the bar tables.

There is a new nightclub wall and there are Sky Tabs and subscriptions to TVT and Partender.

The launch commences and people love the new interior.

The bartenders are keeping on top of orders and the kitchen is serving great food, to the delight of the customers.

The nightclub also starts on time, with two different businesses running in unison within the premises.

What Happened Next at The Grant Bar / Leia's?

Some time later, weekday sales have increased, the VIP booth and nightclub sells out on weekends.

Their customer base is now younger and hipper. More females are also drinking at both the bar and nightclub.

Since the episode aired, former staff have come forward to say that DJ is terrible to work for.

Leia's is open.

Reviews are fairly mixed after the episode aired.

Positive reviews focus on the fun atmosphere and food.

Negative reviews focus on issues with security, unfriendly bartenders and drinks being unavailable due to a lack of ingredients.

The Sandbar / Playa Island Bar - Bar Rescue Update - Open or Closed?

The Sandbar / Playa Island Bar Bar Rescue

In this Bar Rescue episode, Jon Taffer visits The Sandbar Brewery and Grill in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The Sandbar is owned by Sean Cowell.

He had the idea in August 2017 to open a beach themed bar with volleyball courts.

Sean got into a partnership with Mike Martinez, who provided most of the funding.

The bar was a success at first but then the bar began to struggle and sales dropped.

Sean went back to Mike and other investors for more funding to keep afloat and they reduced Sean’s stake to 10%.

Mike no longer acknowledges Sean’s ownership of the bar and they bicker a lot making staff uncomfortable.

Sean doesn’t give staff any control of their roles.

The decor is now confusing to customers as it is not in keeping with the beach theme.

The Sandbar is $600,000 in debt and is currently losing $15,000 a month.

Sean has lost his house and income so he has called on Bar Rescue for help.

Jon comes to Albuquerque and notes a beach bar is a very good idea, especially for New Mexico.

With him is Mixologist Amy Koffsky and Chef Jason Santos.

He gives them the lowdown on Sean and Mike and the ownership squabble between the pair.

He introduces Kenny the manager, bartenders David and Karissa and server Elizabeth .

They see Dave A., a bartender, serve a cocktail in a huge glass which distorts the proportions of alcohol to mixers.

An old lime is used as garnish, tainting the drink.

Victor is a cook and they see him cook using dirty fryer oil.

Amy and Jason are sent in to get a feel for the place.

They see the bar has some space to it and tacky furnishings.

They find Sean and send him to meet with Jon outside.

They order a Watermelon Breeze and Beach Cucumber with Nachos at the bar.

Sean tells Jon when he started and how he defaulted on a loan from the investors.

He lost most of his shares but he claims he still owns his 10%.

Next, Mike also gets to speak with Jon.

Inside, Amy hates the drink that is mostly sour mix and the nachos are cold and salty.

Mike tells Jon his own version of the events with Sean defaulting and losing his business entirely.

Jon then confronts Sean about the truth of the ownership of the bar.

Sean says he has documentation stating he still has 10% of the bar and he produces it.

It is found the document is signed but it has not been seen by the other party and is not executed, therefore it is invalid.

Jon makes him see he has 0% of the bar.

He tells the whole bar Sean is just a manager and has been passing himself off as an owner.

The next day Jon calls them all together for a staff meeting.

The staff say they are failing because of a lack of leadership.

Sean keeps to himself in the office and only comes out to yell at staff.

They look at the bull and how much they lose daily with rentals and not much usage.

The volleyball is only open 10 hours a week, a contrast for what is supposed to be the main attraction.

There is no identity or branding to the bar.

The Partender report showed they lost $2570 over the weekend with projections of $11,000 lost each month and $130,000 annually.

After this the first training starts for the kitchen and the bar.

Victor complains to Jason that he is restricted as he can’t change the menu.

Jason works on reigniting their love for cooking and shows them a fresher way of making Tacos.

Amy then teaches new recipes to infuse consistency in drinks making.

She challenges all three bartenders to make the same drink and they all make it differently.

Sean is asked to make the same drink and he complains that he doesn't drink or make drink so he has never checked their consistency.

Mike gets angry that Sean was not that involved but was spending his money.

Jon meets Mike outside and talks him into giving Sean a chance and seeing how he handles the stress test.

For the stress test, there is red tape dividing the bar into two.

Sean and Kenny are going to manage either half with their own servers and bartenders so they see who comes out on top.

The two managers pick their teams and give them pep talks.

The stress test commences, and the orders pile up in the kitchen and at the bar.

Kenny steps up to help his team bartend to keep up while Sean is noticeably absent.

Sean is spending too much time taking orders and overwhelming his bartenders.

Sean’s side of the bar are left without drinks and there are long waiting times.

Sean is flustered inputting the orders and then making the drinks.

Mike has had enough and calls Sean aside to fire him.

Sean gets angry and it ends in a shouting match between him and Mike.

Jon gets involved and Sean finally leaves.

Jon then meets Kenny to give him the news and tells him the bar needs to be shut down for renovations.

Mike breaks the news to the rest of the staff after work hours and they are happy to work under Kenny, who they believe is the best manager.

Kim trains the staff the next day on some new beach themed cocktails and introduces gelatine shots to upsell drinks.

Jason trains the kitchen on some easy snack dishes with some twists.

The renovation team worked all day and night to prepare for the launch.

The bar has been renamed Playa Island Bar, enhancing the beach theme and making it more consistent throughout.

VFW Post 6216 - Bar Rescue Update - Open or Closed?

VFW Post 6216 Bar Rescue

In this Bar Rescue episode, Jon Taffer visits the VFW Post 6216 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

VFW Post 6216 was built in 1966 and it is dedicated to veterans of foreign wars (VFW).

Rudy Vallez is a member and the commander of the bar.

It is a safe, fun space for their community, veterans and their family, called auxiliary members to mingle.

Johnny is their quartermaster and oversees the upkeep and the books.

Johnny suffers from PTSD and the community feel of the bar keeps him grounded.

Membership has declined over the years and now they serve mainly non-members.

Auxiliary members can work at the bar and are not trained for their jobs.

Jon meets with Mark Decker, who is the department manager for the state of New Mexico International VFW organization.

He tells Jon that he has been with VFW for 14 years.

Membership of the VFW has dropped from 5 million to 1.6 million in 27 years and smaller posts have had to close due to a lack of use.

It is the hope that reviving this post would serve as a template to revive the other posts internationally and revive the VFW.

They both note the exterior and interior is tired looking, although they recognise there is potential for income with the banquet hall.

Jon is introduced to Rudy, Johnny and Ric, a judge advocate that interprets the VFW laws and one of the youngest members.

The median age of the members at this post is 64 years old.

Diane is a manager, Jeff is a member and Christian is a bartender.

They notice customers drinking out of red solo cups, the noticeboard is untidy with posters and American flags are arranged all over the place.

The kitchen is set up like a residential kitchen and isn't getting much use.

Jon tells him he will make it his mission to get the vets to pass down their pride in serving their nation through the post.

Jon goes into the bar and meets Rudy, Johnny and Rick privately.

Jon has had previous work experience with the army and veterans and he feels ashamed of the state of the post.

Johnny said he has given it a lot of the blood, sweat, tears and money and this is all that they could afford.

Jon has an emotional moment with them saying they are warriors and they need more members like them there.

The next day, Jon brings in Tiffany Derry, an expert chef and they see how basic the kitchen is.

They compare it to their grandma's kitchen except the post has 3 microwaves that they use a lot to cook the food.

Jon meets with the VFW members to get their opinion on the bar.

They believe the place is falling apart because there are no new members.

And this is because they misguidedly believe they are too young to join.

But what is really happening is that there is no marketing drive for new members and there is a lack of initiative to generate the much needed funds for marketing.

Jon introduces Tiffany and Rob Floyd, an expert mixologist whose father served in the military.

Rob works with the staff and gives them a quiz on drink recipes, then teaches them to make some simple drinks.

They don't normally serve food but they need to do so for catering events so Tiffany is the chef and expert for the evening’s stress test.

On the night of the stress test the team look unprepared but Jon is hopefully Rudy can take command of the service.

It starts shaky with drinks getting wasted, the bar is instantly overwhelmed and customers are served food without napkins.

They spot dirt in drinks and trace it to the ice machine, identifying animal and insect faeces and insect parts that are dropping into people’s drinks.

Jon shuts the bar down to make the much-needed changes that need to be made to the bar.

Jon speaks with Rudy and Johnny afterwards and tells them they are not traditionally bartenders and cooks.

He tells them that they will put something in place to help them run the post efficiently.

They are also going to organise a Vet’s ball for launch night and set up a meet with young veterans in the hopes of gaining their membership.

All the staff go on the membership drive and talk about their activities.

They talk about how they need their support in joining in and coming for the launch of the post.

Rob trains the staff on some simple quick drinks that they can do for events in their banquet area.

They are given a Smart Bar device, that mixes and dispenses drinks.

Jon unveils the new bar and the exterior has been made more vibrant with a bigger sign with the meaning of VFW spelled out.

There is also a mural on the front of the building.

The interior has been modernised, with pictures of vets and members on the walls in their uniforms.

There is a new Harbour Touch POS system, furniture from East Coast Chair and Barstool and a new ice machine from Manitowoc Ice Machines.

They also have a new beer cooler and a video system for PR from OneStone Hub.

There is an inventory system from Partender and a brand new commercial kitchen from Standard Restaurant Supply.

The new kitchen is a far cry from the three microwaves they had before!

The banquet hall has been renovated too and has been made more elegant with new chandeliers.

The First Annual Auxiliary Ball officially starts and food has been brought in already prepared making it easy for the kitchen.

There is a catering partner and a flower partner for the banquet hall so future events can be seamless as well.

This serves as a blueprint for other posts to use to upgrade and become more profitable.

New members are impressed at the setup and find it more family friendly than they thought.

The staff are hopeful and are expecting new VFW and auxiliary members to sign up from the launch.

What Happened Next at VFW Post 6216

Six weeks later memberships are on the rise.

Bar sales have increased and their banquet hall has been booked for multiple events.

After the show, they are making better use of the banquet hall for fundraising activities including catering events and are taking external bookings.

The Union / The Midway Tavern - Bar Rescue Update - Open or Closed?

The Union Bar Rescue

In this Bar Rescue episode, Jon Taffer visits The Union in Midvale, Utah.

The Union is owned by construction worker Bill Rowe, who bought the bar in 2017.

He purchased the bar with the help of his in-laws.

Bill hired his friends and daughter, Noelle, as staff and he stayed as a hands off owner.

His inexperience shows with the bar being marketed as a sports bar but it only has two TVs that aren’t working.

They are losing $6000 a month and are $500,000 in debt.

Outside, there is a broken limousine sitting in front of the bar that is owned by Bill.

Jon recons the bar with Chef Ryan Scott and mixologist Rob Floyd.

They notice that the bar is in a high-income area so there is a lot of potential to earn a lot of money.

They also notice the limo parked in front of the bar and the wasted opportunity of not branding it to promote the bar.

They meet Bill and he gives them the low down on his finances.

He reveals that he borrowed $300,000 from his in-laws to open the bar.

He has only been able to pay them back $10,000 in the 2 years they have been open.

T-bear is the front of house manager, Meghan and Emjay are bartenders.

Amaya and Cristella are both cooks and Bill’s daughter Noelle is a part time manager.

The team see chicken wings about to be served that are burnt on one side.

They observe a customer struggling to eat the overcooked wings.

They watch a cocktail made incorrectly in the wrong glass which leads to incorrect dilution of the alcohol.

They are breaking Utah law as it is required that there is not more than 1.5oz of alcohol in a glass.

Jon has planned for 50 people to storm the bar to see how the bar’s service really is and how the owner reacts.

The experts with earpieces on take the people into the bar.

The bartenders get angry and are rude when one of the experts keeps asking for drinks.

The bartenders are slammed but Bill is going round giving customers hugs instead of helping to serve drinks.

The experts get to hug Bill and rope him in for a few questions about the bar.

Bill says he can’t make drinks, but he has experts make the drinks.

One of the experts spits out his drink and Jon decides to make an appearance.

Jon makes Bill face the truth that he is wasting his in-law’s money having not learned to make drinks at his own bar.

Jon challenges him to run the bar the next day for the stress test and he would be making a Mule for Rob to test his skills.

After Jon and his team leave, Bill meets his staff to put him through some basics of bartending.

Jon and his team arrive the next morning and the first thing they ask for is Bill to make the cocktail.

Rob tastes it and he tells him that it is a good first attempt at making the drink.

Jon meets with him and the staff and Bill reveals he has extra debt.

This is due to him taking out another mortgage and using two credit cards, one belonging to his wife, to keep the business going.

Bill says they have only have enough money to stay in business for just 3 more months.

Ryan gives initial feedback that the cooks are motivated but they need guidance which Bill is not giving them.

Rob also gives feedback of how they were made to feel unwelcome the night before.

He says there was no system, which led to customers waiting too long for their drinks.

Staff say their busiest nights are Thursday and Friday nights, when they have Bingo and Karaoke.

The Bingo service gets paid but the bar doesn’t make money.

Jon wants a turnaround in Bill and for him to pay back his in-laws.

Ryan trains the kitchen staff on making sweet and sour chicken wings.

Rob trains the bar staff on a whiskey mule and engages them in a challenge that has them communicate to make the drink.

On the night of the stress test, they are motivated and Bill’s wife Nancy is there to watch.

Bill takes orders at first but the ends of the bar have no one attending to them.

No one is running orders from the kitchen so the food sits there.

It takes 7 minutes to get the first drink out and mistakes made slow down the process.

The kitchen is also making wings from raw so need 10-12 minutes, delaying orders.

The chicken wings get burned as they are careless and they have to start over.

Jon shows Bill the state of the kitchen and shuts down the bar because they can’t meet up with the orders.

Jon meets with staff and calls out the bartenders for not getting their pour counts right.

Rob takes the staff through using the new Berg system so they can make 2 drinks at once.

Ryan takes the kitchen staff through making a Bison Burger that will be served as a shareable meal at the table.

Jon meets with Bill and his wife and finds out what motivates him to succeed.

He says it’s his wife and kids and the possibility of paying his in-laws back.

Nancy and Noelle say they are proud of him.

On relaunch night it is revealed that the bar has been renamed The Midway.

The bar will be rebranded with the tagline of ‘drinks, food and fun’.

The interior has been changed into a more colourful game house/bar.

Merlin Wireless have put in a new Berg Wireless system that is operated by a watch.

There is new furniture provided by East Coast Chair and Barstool.

There is a new centre piece to break up the room and a caarousel horse on one wall for the amusement park theme.

Standard Restaurant Supply have provided a new workstation and the DJ system will be computerised by Orange Door Entertainment Systems.

There are new Harbour Touch POS systems, Skytabs and digital table tents.

They have a lifetime subscription to TVT and some simple new uniforms for the staff.

The doors are opened to the public and everyone is busy serving customers.

The kitchen has systems in place and they are meeting up with completing orders.

Bill is running food out of kitchen and using the POS system to process orders.

The bar is working non stop to serve the customers.

The customers are happy with both the food and drinks that they receive.

What Happened Next at The Union

Six weeks later it is reported business is up 20%.

They are attracting younger customers and Bill is managing the bar.

At the request of regular customers they returned some of their former dishes to the menu.

They did this after customers complained about the limited Bar Rescue menu.

The Midway Tavern is open.

Reviews are mixed as many of regulars don't like the changes.

There are complaints of less tables available, uncleaned bathrooms and a smaller menu.

Linda Lou's Time For Two / Purser's Bar - Bar Rescue Update - Open or Closed?

Linda Lou's Time For Two Bar Rescue

In this Bar Rescue episode, Jon Taffer visits Linda Lou’s Time for Two in Layton, Utah.

Linda Lou’s Time for Two is owned by Brandon Purser who had the dream of running a bar since he was 12.

The bar was financed mostly by his mother Winona George, who thought it would be a steady means of income.

He bought a popular profitable local dive bar in 2013 but his inexperience has led to the decline of the bar.

Brandon fell into a depression making it hard for him to show up at work.

Winona had to step in with $50,000, the last of her retirement savings to keep the bar running.

The bar has so many problems as the building is in serious disrepair and they constantly run out of supplies.

They are currently $300,000 in debt and are losing $8000 every week.

Jon is unable to recon the bar out front because of the busy parking lot so he uses a space close by.

He is joined by expert mixologist Phil Wills and they both note the odd colour choice of green curtains and pink awning.

They think that the branding is very wrong for a bar.

Jon thinks that it gives the impression of a closed tea parlour.

Jon gives Phil the low down on the ownership situation and how they are now just days away from closing.

Anthony is a bartender and good friend of Brandon and Amanda and Trina are also bartenders.

It is Utah law to have food available to be served with drinks but there is no kitchen or cook at the bar.

Jon calls in hockey players Ryan Reeves and Nate Schmidt to go undercover to try out their service.

They order cocktails including a Taco Berry Lime and Kiss Me.

Brandon is still sitting in his office, even though there are customers in the bar.

The Taco Berry Lime is too sweet and they are out of whipped cream for the Kiss Me cocktail and serve it without.

They immediately ask for margaritas after rejecting their initial drinks.

Trina, who is serving them makes many mistakes as she doesn’t have the proper tools to make the drinks.

The margaritas are served and they are too sweet as well.

Next, they order chicken wings which are prepared by Trina in a fryer.

She doesn’t use any gloves, leading to cross contamination.

The chicken wings they receive are far too greasy.

Phil then goes in to the bar to see how they react to him coming in.

He immediately meets the other two bartenders and has them demonstrate making margaritas and it is a disaster.

Jon decides to step in and Brandon finally comes out of the office.

Jon gets the feedback from his spies and they say that the food, drinks and environment don’t give them any reason to come back.

Jon tells Brandon that he is wasting his mother’s time and money.

The staff are surprised when they hear that they are four days from closing and will be looking for new jobs.

Jon is not sure if he can save the bar in just four days.

Brandon is made to clean the bar that evening.

Jon comes in the next day and meets with all the staff.

Anthony is the longest serving member of staff.

He has worked at the bar for 6 years, as long as it has been open.

The staff say that the biggest problem is that they don’t know what Brandon does behind the scenes.

They say that they are frequently are out of supplies so lose paying customers when they can’t serve them what they want.

Brandon is so overtaken with emotion that he steps away to cry in private.

The staff join in the tears as they know how much he has on his plate and how much he has put in to the bar.

Jon decides to let Brandon take the day off and be with his family.

The staff, led by Anthony, will work to get ready for the stress test.

Phil comes in to train the staff on making a margarita cocktail.

Anthony is the most senior staff but he isn’t confident at mixing cocktails.

On the night of the stress test, Brandon is back and asked to stay in the back as an owner.

He take notes of changes that need to be made and Anthony is officially in charge for the night.

It is immediately apparent the bar area is too small for the staff to serve drinks to multiple customers.

They are constantly piling up to get to ingredients for cocktails with only one workstation.

Communication is not good between the bartenders causing bottlenecks and delays.

There is a plumbing accident as a flood builds up from the dishwasher and the floor behind the bar gets slippery.

The bar is shut down because of this hazard as it is not safe for the staff to be rushing around.

Jon and Phil have a short meeting afterwards and devise a plan to draw customers to the bar and solve the kitchen situation.

Phil comes in to train the staff on some more cocktails creating a new cocktail programme with novelty glassware.

Jon meets with Brandon and Winona and tells her they are working so Brandon can feel less guilty spending time at either work or with family.

It will also mean that Winona doesn’t have to come in to help out anymore.

Jon’s team not only work on remodelling the bar but also fixing the plumbing issue to get it ready for launch night.

The bar is revealed and it has been renamed the Purser’s Bar.

A speakeasy concept has been created with a sign that says The Laundromat and then reveals its real name.

Inside the front area is an actual laundromat with a secret door that goes into the bar.

The interior is darker and has been made more modern with a snack station.

Jon reveals they can make more money selling snacks than their poor chicken wings and it complies with state law.

There is a new workstation and three new Harbour Touch POS systems.

There are new table bases, bar stools and a new fireplace.

There is also a light to show when someone comes into the laundromat.

Brandon is happy with the changes and excited to show it to his mother.

On relaunch, the bar staff are happy and motivated, making drinks confidently for the customers.

The customers love the new concept and the drinks and bar snacks are a big hit.

Jon shows Brandon the fixed plumbing problem and he is relieved it has been sorted.

What Happened Next at Linda Lou's Time For Two / Purser's Bar?

Sometime later it is revealed the community has embraced the new speakeasy concept.

The sales and customer numbers continue to increase.

Linda Lou's Time For Two / Purser's Bar closed in December 2019.

Many regulars didn't like the laundromat front and many customers didn't realise there was a bar there.

Brandon posted that there was a 67% decline of customers and the owner was seeking to undo some of the changes.

The bar was listed for sale for $200,000 in January 2020 with all of the fixings and furniture and was sold fairly quickly.

Lucky 66 Bowl / Great 66 Entertainment Center - Bar Rescue Update - Open or Closed?

Lucky 66 Bowl Bar Rescue

In this Bar Rescue episode, Jon Taffer visits Lucky 66 Bowl in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Lucky 66 Bowl was bought by Mike Draper, a Vietnam veteran.

He bought the bowling centre in memory of his father who was a pro bowler.

His son Jay is the general manger and his granddaughter Daphne manages the bar.

Mike hopes to one day hand over the business to them so that he can retire.

When the bar first opened business boomed but it has since slowed down.

With the pressure, Mike is bad tempered to his both staff and customers causing both to leave in droves.

Mike is over $1 million in debt and is still losing money every day.

Jon arrives with expert mixologist Alex Goode and chef Anthony Lamas to recon the bar.

They note that the area is not ideal even as a drinking spot with a bowling alley.

They think that the separate entrance to the bar, down a dark tunnel way looks shady and unsafe.

They believe that the place has promise with more than 50% of the local population being singles.

The interior is also good with an elevated bar and windows overlooking the bowling alley.

The let down of the place is the bar area, which is tired looking and uninspiring.

They find out that Mike is losing about $15,000 a month and is a million dollars in debt.

They meet bartender Vanessa, who has only been there for 3 weeks.

The chef Joel leases out the food operations with his son and runs it as a separate business.

Their food has a few complaints which include greasiness of the food that can effect bowling.

Miles Snr and Miles Jnr manage the bowling lanes.

Miles Snr has been fired from his role 9 times and re-hired 10 times.

That night, a bartender got in an accident and Miles daughter Crystal, a hairstylist is in to help bartend.

There are three different families working in the business that risk losing their jobs if it closes.

Jon sends in some local young singles to test the service at the bar.

They order 3 lemon drops but the bar has no lemons to put in the drinks.

The bar is left unattended for a while with the whiskey left unattended right in front of the customers.

The recon team get their lemon drops but they taste horrible.

They decide to order some different drinks but they are no better and also taste bad.

They ask for a water next and Mike is rude to them.

He gets intrusive and cuts them off from ordering anymore alcohol.

Mike gets aggressive towards them, wagging a finger at them and asks them to leave.

Jon is upset at his behaviour and comes in to confront Mike, who tries to defend himself.

Jon asks the staff in front of everyone if Mike is an a*s and they all agree, even his son.

Jon reconsiders helping the bar because Mike doesn’t want to admit he is the problem.

Jon walks out with his team asking Mike to clean the bar.

The next day, Jon talks to the staff after asking Mike to leave temporarily.

They say customer service is the major problem and they are so close to ruin they are living month to month.

They all have a lot on the line if they lose their jobs.

Jon notices there are no staff that aren’t family and have worked there a long time, meaning the staff turnover is high.

They find out Daphne is a great bowling alley mechanic and can run any part of the venue.

She is called in and she tells of her disappointment and why she had to leave.

Mike is called in and he is told the truth on how they all feel.

He says he has felt Daphne’s absence and Jon manages to get through to him.

He admits to needing help to turn the business around and Daphne agrees to come back.

Alex takes the staff through a training of some basic drinks.

Anthony takes them through making non-greasy snacks, that would be better for bowlers.

Jon calls the staff together.

They set up some bowling pins on a table where if something goes wrong one pin is knocked down.

Miles Snr apologies to Mike for his previous behaviour.

The stress test kicks off and the drinks are coming out slow, leaving customers waiting.

Mike is doing well greeting customers.

There is no system in place for placing orders for food as handwritten orders are taken to the kitchen.

Soon the ticketing strategy dissolves into a mess.

People are being served twice and no one knows where some of the food goes.

There are 5 tables still not being served so 5 pins are removed from the table.

Food is sent back to the kitchen for being raw and customers are charged for food that never arrives.

Soon there is only one pin left on the table.

The stress test is ended and the bar is shut down because they can’t catch up.

Jon takes Mike aside to see what new changes he is going to make to open the space and make the bar functional.

The next day, Alex trains them on simple cocktails that are fast to make so they can meet up with orders.

Anthony trains them a grease-free quesadilla dish.

Jon meets with Mike, Jay and Daphne and helps them open up and agree to help Mike to move the business forward.

Overnight, the bar is renovated and has been renamed the Great 66 Entertainment Center.

The name change is to describe the multiple entertainment offerings.

There is a bold new sign outside and the interior has been modernised.

It is decorated with bowling pins and balls at different points.

There is a new DJ Booth and video systems for PR.

There is a new printer in the kitchen and a server pager system so servers know when to pick up food.

They have a Partender subscription for inventory and TVT for trainings.

The interior has been changed with new bar stools and tables and updated plumbing.

Jon calls Mike to the side to tell him that he will be donating $10,000 to cover payroll and expenses for a month.

The relaunch is underway and returning customers are impressed with the changes to the space.

The staff are using the printers and the pager system to fulfil orders.

The bar is working faster serving drinks timely and the customers love the new food.

What Happened Next at Lucky 66 Bowl / Great 66 Entertainment Center?

Sometime later, bar sales have increased.

Daphne returned to her role as full time bar manager and Mike has kept a positive attitude.

They reverted back to their previous name Lucky 66 Bowl and didn't keep the name Jon chose.

Lucky 66 Bowl closed in January 2021.

They were forced to close during the pandemic and were unable to reopen.

Reviews after the show were mostly positive with some criticisms of bowling and a lack of air conditioning.

The building was sold in August 2019.

SacTown Sports Bar & Grill / Brannan Manor - Bar Rescue Update - Open or Closed?

SacTown Sports Bar & Grill Bar Rescue

In this Bar Rescue episode, Jon Taffer visits Sactown Sports Bar and Grill in Old Town, Sacramento.

Sactown Sports Bar and Grill is owned by Chris Eaton, a retired police officer.

He always wanted to own a sports bar, so bought this one in 2016.

The bar is located in a tourist hot spot so Sactown boomed in the beginning.

Things slowed down and reality hit Chris as he had no prior experience in running a bar.

He has focused on the wrong things having almost 800 signed jerseys in his bar.

However, he doesn’t know how to pour a drink for his customers.

The staff are disheartened and have lost respect for Chris with some drinking at work.

Ricardo is the new chef who was meant to turn things around but Chris is not allowing him make changes.

Sactown loses $8000 a month and Chris is currently in $450,000 in debt.

Jon is in awe of the old history of Sactown.

A woman named Mary died in the basement of Sactown from a flooding.

Jon recons the bar with a world famous recording artist T-pain.

He fills him in on Chris’s situation.

Jon has him, T-pain and 40 people enter the bar, hoping they can stay incognito, so they can test the service.

They see the space is quite big and think the bar has history which should be celebrated.

They both order wings, New York strip steaks and French dip.

They ask the server to suggest some cocktails for them and they have 2 specialty cocktails.

A meal is sent back to the kitchen and Ricardo smashes the dish against the wall.

He is upset his kitchen manager can’t make a simple grilled cheese sandwich.

Upstairs, Jon and his companion receive their drinks and they are too strong.

The steak is raw in the middle and as they eat, other patrons tell them not to bother with the food.

The wings are undercooked and rubbery.

Jon requests Ricardo come to the table and offers the meal to him to taste but he refuses.

Chris is called and he was completely unaware Jon was in the bar.

Jon tells him the feedback from himself and T-pain and points out Sacramento isn’t a sports town.

Jon points out all the bad food the customers are struggling with and asks Chris if they should pay for their meals.

Jon leaves with T-pain after calling Chris out in front of the whole bar.

The next day, Jon meets with Chris and the rest of the staff.

He has him tell the rest of the staff the state of the finances and how they can only stay open for 2 more months.

Jon reveals the Partender report of the prior 3 days.

They lost $3180 over a weekend, this would amount to $13700 a month and $165,000 in a year.

The staff are split about the sports bar theme saying it is not a bad idea but not for this area.

Jon points out majority of the tourists are women and a sports bar is not the type of place they would want to go.

Chris is not convinced sports isn’t big in Sacramento.

Jon pulls reports on the leading sports radio in Sacramento that is ranked no 21 for listeners.

Jon tells Chris he needs to market to tourists not the few locals that are interested in sports.

Chris insists on a sports bar and Jon says he has no reason to be there if the bar is to remain a sports bar.

Jon has the staff and Chris take down all the sports memorabilia as they would need to redo the walls as part of the renovations.

Expert mixologist Tommy Palmer comes in to train the staff.

He has them test their pouring skills in order to correct their overpouring in the Partender report.

All of them fail to hit the mark and they are to focus on consistency going forward.

Expert Chef Tiffany Derry comes in to train the staff on faster chicken recipes.

It is time for the stress test and T-pain is back with Amber his wife and other patrons.

Chris serves them and tries to make their drink orders but fumbles.

They get their drinks in 9 mins which is just a little late.

Ricardo has to run food to the bar area and it puts the kitchen a little behind.

The bartenders need help but Chris is nowhere to be found.

T-pain’s table has been waiting 22 mins for their food but they get it eventually.

Overall, they liked their drinks and food.

The stress test revealed a lot but it was not a disaster.

Chris calls his staff together and reassures them and says he is proud of them.

Tommy trains them the next day on some new drinks with haunted themes.

Tiffany trains the staff on a simple high-end meal using toasted bone marrow.

But that’s not all, once the meal is done customers can use the bone marrow as a luuge for luuge shots.

It is a strategy to upsell drinks to patrons.

Jon’s team work all night and the bar has been renovated.

The bar has been renamed Brannan Manor after one of the founding fathers of Sacramento town.

The inside of the bar has been modernised and made warmer with its historic roots brought to the front.

There are six new HarbourTouch terminals and hubs that allow customers to charge their phones.

They have been given a lifetime subscription to Partender and TVT.

The relaunch gets underway and Chris is helpful behind the bar and engaging with customers.

The customers love the new drinks and food.

Ricardo is doing great in the kitchen having more freedom and meeting orders.

What Happened Next at SacTown Sports Bar & Grill / Brannan Manor?

Sometime later, tourists love the new concept of the bar.

Sales have increased.

Chris has stayed positive and has kept his sports memorabilia away from the bar.

They have kept the name of Brannan Manor.

Brannan Manor is open.

Reviews after the show are mixed and there are negative reviews on the food and long wait for food and drinks.

Many also complain about the loud club music being played during the day.

They see John do some questionable things in the kitchen.

Jon has arranged for some girls to come in at intervals to test the service in the bar.

The first two come in and order a watermelon cocktail and a gimlet.

Alyssa serves the cocktail in the wrong glass.

She doesn’t know what a gimlet is made of even though it’s a traditional drink.

Alyssa is then asked for a whiskey sour and she makes it incorrectly.

The ladies make fun of the drink.

Alyssa takes her bag and leaves for the night without telling anyone.

Two more girls and 15 more people walk into the bar.

Jon has one more bartender pulled from the bar and Brad doesn’t notice.

Soon all the bartenders are pulled out and Brad is still sitting at his table drinking.

Kortney notices and jumps in to help but the daughters are pulled too.

Jon can’t take it anymore and goes in to sit with Brad.

Brad never noticed all his employees had left the building.

There are customers not being served.

Brad says he can’t serve customers because he had been drinking.

Jon finds out even if he was sober, he couldn’t make drinks.

He can't use the POS system or open the cash register.

Jon points out that his father would have noticed and gotten in on the action.

He said that he was wasting his father’s legacy.

Jon gives him a challenge to list the things his father did daily at the bar and then tend to the bar.

Jon meets the staff the next day and explains how he orchestrated the previous night’s situation.

He found it useful as it exposed Brad’s non involvement in the business.

Jon then speaks with Kortney on her role there and why she quit.

Jon points out Brad is destroying the legacy by losing the bar before he could hand it over to his daughters.

Brad read out the list of things his father did, and he couldn’t do half of them.

He promises to try and do better in memory of his father.

Jon brings out his experts and the training of staff commences.

Tommy talks to the staff on how they need to know traditional drinks like the gimlet.

Alyssa is called behind the bar to make a drink but she refuses.

Tommy calls on someone else and just before training on the correct way commences.

Alyssa grabs her bag and walks out once again.

Brad walks out to try and talk to her.

She insists on leaving and he says she doesn’t like the criticism.

Tommy is surprised he didn’t fire her.

In the kitchen, Anthony notices the cart of food was left out all night.

He explains it’s a health code violation.

He takes them through making a chicken dish with fresh ingredients.

Soon it is time for the stress test and the staff minus Alyssa are present and ready.

Brad is standing around once it starts while everyone else is busy.

The daughters are sitting it out as they are not staff and observing.

Brad can barely take orders and can’t help at the bar when a whole section hasn’t been served.

He is the problem in the kitchen, the bar and front of the house.

A customer’s chair loses a wheel and fails over.

Jon doesn’t want to embarrass Brad further by telling him to shut the bar down.

He has his daughters deliver the message.

After the customers are sent home, Brad is called into a meeting with his daughters and Jon.

They lay out their observations and they want a change.

If he fails the stress test, he should hand the bar over to them to run.

He hesitates at first and he needs convincing from both of them and Jon before he agrees.

Jon and his experts brainstorm ideas on making the bar stand out.

Tommy trains the staff on traditional cocktails with a modern twist.

While Anthony takes the staff on a burger that could start conversations because of its spiciness.

Jon’s team work all day and soon it is time to reveal the new bar.

The exterior has been made more colourful and they haven’t change the bars name.

The interior has been modernised and a trolley station theme has been created.

There is a trolley in the center of the bar along with some benches.

The trolley car doubles as a karaoke stage and the lounge is now an engineer’s lounge.

To keep Jex in mind, his pictures are up on the walls.

The original wallpaper he put up has been untouched.

East Coast Chair and Barstool provided new tables and chairs.

There are two Future POS terminals with Berg systems.

There is a new Manitowac Ice Machine and One Stone Hub table tents for PR with charging cables.

They now have a lifetime subscription to TVT for training.

The staff love the changes and Kortney and Paige are running the bar that night.

They let customers in and are loving the new look to the bar.

The bartenders are doing grea and the sisters are running food.

Brad is taking orders supporting his daughters.

The customers love the changes, food, and ambience.

What Happened Next at The Fifth?

Six weeks later, it is revealed the bar is seeing increased business.

Kortney and Paige quit again as their father refused to give them control of the bar.

The Fifth Amendment is closed.

They closed in March 2021.

Reviews were mixed after the episode was filmed.

Most of the reviews compliment the drinks and atmosphere.

There are some complaints about service and about Brad the owner specifically.

It is hard to tell if these are genuine due to the show.
