In this Restaurant Impossible episode, Robert Irvine visits Deraney’s Two City Tavern in Barnesville, Georgia.
Deraney’s Two City Tavern is owned by Christopher Joseph Deraney.
He has owned the restaurant for around three and a half years.
Christopher’s grandparents Joe and Mable owned a department store in Barnesville for many years.
Christopher moved to Barnesville in December 2014.
He currently lives in his grandparents house.
After two days of living there, his grandmother passed away.
His grandmother was the person he could trust with anything.
Christopher’s nails are painted the same shade of red that his grandmother always wore.
He found the restaurant when the previous owners were selling it.
Christopher used his grandparents department store as collateral to help pay for the restaurant.
He is losing $6,000 a month and having to invest his own money into it.
Christopher’s inheritance and all his savings are gone.
He took out another loan when the money ran out.
This time it was leveraged against his grandparents house.
Christopher says that this was the hardest thing he had to do.
The total debt is around $190,000.
They only have a couple months left before they would have to close.
Christopher will lose everything if they close including the department store.
Robert arrives at the restaurant.
In the dining room, the booths need touching up.
There are fairy lights, which Robert hates.
Robert says the restaurant is a mess.
Robert calls Christopher into the restaurant for a brief about the restaurant.
Christopher has no previous restaurant experience and has no clue about the numbers.
Bill is the one who knows the numbers.
The restaurant pays all of Christopher’s bills.
Christopher waits tables to make extra money.
Christopher leaves the remaining work to the other staff.
Robert asks Christopher what it’s like to be a failure and tells him to grow up or sell it to someone else.
Robert says he wants to see the service.
Robert asks the customers why people aren’t coming here.
The customers are silent and nobody wants to say what the reason is.
Robert makes Christopher clean all the dishes and the tables by himself.
Robert asks to try the food and brands it as garbage.
The pizza is soft and the pasta is overcooked and has no flavor.
The meatball tastes like sawdust.
The spaghetti is cooked nicely but the sauce tastes like it came out of a can.
The mushrooms are old and the alfredo tastes like pure cream.
The steak is seasoned nicely but doesn’t tase very good.
Robert says they can take all of the food and throw it in the trash.
Christopher is shocked that Robert didn’t like the food.
Robert meets with his design team Lynn and Tom to discuss the design concept.
The staff begins taking everything out of the restaurant.
Robert meets with the staff to discuss what the issues are.
Caleb says that Christopher comes in late, micromanages, leaves early, and leaves the staff to do all of the work.
The staff doesn’t respect Christopher.
Robert admits that he doesn’t respect Christopher either.
The community says that Christopher comes off as pretentious.
He can’t pay the bills but throws lavish parties.
Robert tells Christopher he wants him to learn the numbers by himself.
He also tells him to write a speech to tell his staff tomorrow.
Christopher says the most important lesson he learnt that day was humility.
He realizes he has a lot to think about tonight.
Christopher says this is a lot harder than he thought it would be.
The next day, Robert meets with Christopher to discuss his thoughts.
Christopher says he is someone who hasn’t earned his last name.
Christopher and Robert meet with the staff.
Christopher reads his speech to his staff and gets emotional while reading.
He promises that he will step up and be a better manager.
He tells the staff that he loves them and he hugs them.
The staff feels like Christopher really meant what he said.
Robert has his team set up some challenges around the town.
Christopher must be a leader and help his team complete these challenges.
If Christopher doesn’t step up now, he never will.
Robert shows Christopher and the cook recipes he believes will sell well on the new menu.
Christopher loves the dishes.
They begin putting the finishing touches on the restaurant.
They are running late for the reopening.
Robert says he can’t wait to show the new restaurant to Christopher.
Robert brings Christopher inside his new restaurant.
Robert tells him to open his eyes.
Christopher is amazed by how great the restaurant looks.
He says it is unbelievable and a lot to take in.
All new lights and tables have been added.
Christopher brings in Bill.
Christopher invites the customers inside for the first time since the remodel.
On relaunch, the customers love the way the restaurant looks now.
Christopher seems to be leading the staff successfully.
The customers love the food.
The kitchen is running beautifully.
Christopher tells his staff that he is very proud of him.
Robert tells Christopher good luck and to go and get it.
What Happened Next at Deraney's Two City Tavern?
A few months after Robert’s visit, sales are up 15%.
Christopher is working overtime.
Chef Bill is now co-owner of Deraney’s.
Deraney's Two City Tavern is open.
Reviews are mostly positive after the show with customers loving the atmosphere and food.
